A new purpose-built insulation training facility in Bayswater is helping create the next generation of skilled installers, bringing real-world installation scenarios into a practical, controlled training environment.
Developed through a collaboration between Enviroflex, Green Building Institute and the Association of Wall and Ceiling Industries (AWCI), the facility has been designed to give insulation installers practical experience that closely reflects the conditions they will encounter in Australian homes.
Developed with input from the University of Melbourne’s Retrofit Lab, the training environment goes beyond traditional classroom learning, allowing installers to build their knowledge, confidence and practical skills before stepping onto site.
Training for real-world conditions
No two Australian homes are exactly the same – and installing insulation is rarely as simple as placing insulation into an empty roof or wall cavity.
Installers regularly need to navigate restricted roof spaces, electrical wiring, different access points, existing building structures and a range of other obstacles while maintaining safe work practices and achieving a high-quality installation.
The new Bayswater facility has been specifically designed to recreate these conditions.
Practical training scenarios include:
- Accessing ceiling spaces through roof tiles
- Entering roof spaces through manholes
- Working safely around electrical wiring and other services
- Working within residential house framing
- Installing insulation in realistic ceiling and wall configurations
By providing hands-on experience in a controlled setting, installers can develop practical skills and learn how to respond to common challenges before encountering them in customers’ homes.
